Michal simonfy5/4/2023 Other interests included science and meteorology. His hobbies included model airplane building and flying. He was an amateur military and old west historian and had a keen interest in Native American art and culture. After moving to Colorado he was an avid goose hunter, and for a time belonged to a private hunting club. In both Montana and Colorado, he hunted big game and upland birds. While still in Montana he was an accomplished Big Spring Creek fisherman. After leaving NCAR, Mike spent over 20 years at the University of Colorado, working in Accounting at the Boulder campus, and retiring from the Health Sciences Center in Denver. While at NCAR, he and several scientists founded Ambient Analysis, an air quality and environmental impact research company. Mike headed the Accounting department at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Mike, Mary Lou and daughters Cynthia and Michele moved to Colorado, settling in Boulder. Mike and his parents sold the dairy and a portion of the creamery business in 1966. Mike brought modern creamery methods home from college and introduced milk cartons to the creamery, eventually replacing glass bottles. After college, he joined his parents as their partner at the creamery and together they acquired the Bourke Diary on Lower Spring Creek, which he operated. During college, he earned his pilot’s license and was a member of the Flying Bobcats. Mike graduated from Montana State in 1960, with degrees in Accounting and Agriculture. While stationed at Fort Carson he met Mary Lou Hilker and they were married in Denver. Army in January 1955 for a two-year tour, and served at Fort Gordon, Georgia and Fort Carson, Colorado. In the Simonfy family tradition, he played baseball as a boy and was an avid baseball fan all his life.Īfter attending Montana State University for a short time, he joined the U.S. ![]() In high school, he was active in sports and FFA. In his youth, he spent many hours at the creamery working alongside his parents. He grew up in Lewistown, where his parents owned and operated the Lewistown Creamery and Locker Plant. Mike was born October 6, 1934, the son of Michael and Alice (Folda) Simonfy in Lewistown, Montana. (Mike) Simonfy, 76, passed away peacefully at his home in Denver, Colorado on Friday February 18, 2011, his daughters by his side, after a long painful battle with osteoarthritis and a short battle with cancer.
